El pretérito imperfecto de subjuntivo:
Este tiempo hace referencia a acciones en el pasado y se usa en las mismas situaciones en que se usa el subjuntivo presente.

This tense is used with past actions in the same situations in which we use the present subjunctive.

Ejemplo:

Espero que Emilio tenga el libro. (I hope that Emilio has the book.)
Esperaba que Emilio tuviera el libro. (I hoped that Emilio had the book.)

Formación:
Primero se elimina la terminación “-ron” de la tercera persona plural del pretérito indefinido.
First of all, we remove the “-ron” ending from the third person plural indefinite preterit.

Luego, a esta raíz se le añaden las siguientes terminaciones. Se puede usar cualquiera de los dos grupos de terminaciones –

Cuando + subjuntivo	Martha: Victoria, ¿cuándo irás a Brasil? Victoria: Cuando termine el semestre. ¿Y tú? Martha: No lo sé, cuando tenga dinero. Martha: Victoria, when will you go to Brazil? Victoria: At the end of term. And you? Martha: I don’t know. When I have some money.
Cuando + indicativo	Cuando viajo siempre llevo una linterna. (acción habitual en el presente) When I travel, I always take a torch. (habitual action in the present) Cuando era pequeña, vivía en el campo. (acción pasada) When I was young, I lived in the countryside. (past action)
EN CUANTO – TAN PRONTO COMO (AS SOON AS)
En cuanto + subjuntivo	A: ¿A qué hora me llamarás? B: En cuanto termine de trabajar. A: What time will you ring me? B: As soon as I finish work. A: ¿A qué hora te vas a acostar? B: Iremos, en cuanto acabe los ejercicios de gramática. A: It’s late! What time are we going to go to the cinema? B: We’ll go as soon as I finish the grammar exercises.
En cuanto + indicativo	En cuanto llego a mi oficina, acostumbro tomar café. (acción habitual) As soon as I arrive at my office, I usually drink coffee. (habitual action) En cuanto llegué a la oficina, la secretaria me entregó el documento. (acción pasada) As soon as I arrived at the office, the secretary handed me the document. (past action)

En general, si queremos referirnos a un momento del futuro o hablamos de algo que va a suceder, usamos expresiones temporales con subjuntivo.

In general, if we want to refer to a future time, or talk about something that is going to happen, we use time expressions with the subjunctive tense.
